Goodbye Fanalei!

I am happy about what I have achieved during my time here. I collected a lot of data for my research and it will be very interesting to analyse all of these when I get back to Southampton. But I am even more happy about all the new friendships that I made and the time that I took to explore and enjoy Fanalei. I am so grateful for the warm welcome that everyone gave me here. It’s something that I will never forget in my life. Thank you, Fanalei!

Three weeks at Fanalei Island have passed very quickly. I spent every day working on my research project and suddenly it was already time for saying ‘goodbye’ to this beautiful island and its lovely people.

And rather than writing loads of text here, I would like to share a few photos with you:

Moonlight chill and relax with the Fanalei girls
‘Goodbye’ dinner at Ethel’s house
Exploring Fanalei’s mangroves in a traditional canoe
With Kate – one of the most amazing people I have met in my life

  1. Thank you so much Marie. Great and inspiring story. Love the subject of your mission at Fanalei, a global catastrophe that we will have to live with for the rest of our lives unfortunately. However, on a more positive side climate change has tested our own resilience as a people and one thing for sure is that, despite the changes we are experiencing in terms of losing bits of the island yearly or daily even, our friendship as a people is steadfast and on that note, we loved having you with us Marie. Count yourself as one of us and should you wish to take another trip to the Sollies, remember you have a home away from home at Fanalei. Thanks again Marie and all the best in your very important work. Cheers, Ethel

    • Thank you so much Ethel 🙂 I had a wonderful time at Fanalei. Those memories will stay with me my whole life! And I would love to return and meet you all again. Fingers crossed that the situation with the pandemic will improve soon. All the best, Marie
